EVERYDAY NATURE SKETCHBOOKS – with Deb Mostert

This course will involve getting into a daily habit of nature drawing in the context of a sketchbook. With a simple kit of materials, you can carry everywhere, you will discover that you can be opportunistic about drawing from the natural world, and this can help get us into daily creative habits of observation, discovery and wonder.

We will explore the use of sketchbooks as an incubator, a sentimental keepsake, a mind clearer, a list holder, an idea launcher, a best friend, a personal, intimate, and honest playground. We will discover that we CAN draw and that any time is a good time to build our creative habits!

Deb holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from Qld College of Art and has had 18 solo shows and been involved in more than 70 group shows in both regional and commercial galleries. She has won several prizes and been a finalist in many National art prizes including the Bale Painting Prize, the Salon de Refuses, Jacaranda Drawing Prize, and Marie Ellis Prize for Drawing.

She has over 18 years of teaching experience with workshops and artist-in-residencies. Deb is committed to a daily sketchbook practice and loves to share the potential that is within everyone to carry a sketchbook and use it to record life.

BORDERLINE WORKSHOPS FOR 2023

• EXPERIMENTAL FELTMAKING – with Sheryl Wright

July 1-2, at the Engine Driver’s Barracks, Tenterfield. 10am start

$160 for members, $195 for non-members (this included a $35 membership fee).

The emphasis will be on exploring texture, both on 2D and 3D pieces. Students will play with colour choices and the fundamentals of wet felting. All materials supplied.

• BOTANICAL ART – with Nola Sindel

July 15-16, at the Engine Driver’s Barracks, Tenterfield. 10am start

This workshop will include Observation of plants, layout and composition, shading and tone in graphite and painting.

• CHARCOAL DRAWING for beginners and more advanced – with Lizzie Connor

October 14-15. at the Engine Driver’s Barracks, Tenterfield. 10am start. Location may alter during course.

Students will investigate the various types of charcoal available and how to use them.

The workshop will also look at different paper and even canvas surfaces that can be used with charcoal. The class will also create textured surfaces on paper. The course will offer different ways of approaching your drawing and increase and/or refresh your drawing skills.

• ECO FRIENDLY ETCHING – with Liz Powell

Nov 18-19, at the Engine Driver’s Barracks, Tenterfield. 10am start

$220 for members, $255 for non-members (this included a $35 membership fee). Limit of 6 

The aim is to have fun and to expand the understanding of the potential of metal plate etching. The quality of line and the potential for tone is unique to metal plate that has been etched rather than engraved or scratched, and it can be done without harmful acids or too many specialized tools. All materials supplied.

Our workshop series continued in April with two days with talented Artist Deb Mostert.

On day 1 participants explored the possibilities inherent in an Artists Journal in beautiful Girraween National Park – a traditional method of developing concepts, recording subjects and exploring new ways of viewing the world.

Day 2 was spent designing, sculpting and casting a combination of small found objects and handmade low relief sculptures. Artists will be able to reuse the moulds many times – results will be revealed in our travelling exhibition ‘Journeys on the Border’ later in the year.

Deb Mostert holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from Queensland College of Art and has had 17 solo shows and been involved in more than 65 group shows in both regional and commercial galleries. Our 2022 Workshop Series, which will culminate in our travelling exhibition ‘Journeys on the Border’ later in the year, began February 21 and 22nd.

Artists had a fabulous two days in in our new home at the Tenterfield Railway Museum Engine Drivers Cottage extending their self-portraiture skills with Gympie Artist & Teacher Joolie Gibbs.

Borderline Artists will be showcasing their artisan talent at the Summit, right next door to the Alpaca Artisans Shop.

Works for sale cover a wide variety of mediums.

Meet the makers all weekend, discuss their techniques, and buy a piece of local artwork.

There will be ongoing short workshops by experienced tutors every day, an ideal time to have a “taster” of what is available for later full workshops, right here on the beautiful Granite Belt. A full description of the workshops available can be seen at the GBART Website.

Borderline Regional Arts are honoured to have secured the expertise of 4 expert Printmakers for their series of workshops running March through June 2021. Watch for details of the travelling Exhibition that is planned to follow this series.

March 6th and 7th kicked off the series with SAM SOSNOWSKI sharing the intricacies of MOKOLITO, a Japanese printmaking process. www.samsosgallery.com

Mokulito is a revelation as it manages to combine the graphic qualities of Japanese woodblock with the tonality of stone lithography. Mokulito enables the blending of litho tones and sharp woodcut marks on the same piece of substrate using a wide range of drawing materials directly on the surface of the plywood without the use of acids, etches or turpentine.

Discover the joy of designing and printing your own images onto fabric, paper or timber, over a weekend. This workshop is suitable for beginners, or the more experienced artist who wishes to explore the medium further. A comprehensive range of processes for screen-printing will be covered, including the art of hand-cut stencils, photo-emulsion application, stripping your screen, and printing with solvent-free inks onto your choice of substrates: from  t-shirts and textiles to  paper and  plywood. We will also include a demonstration of transferring screen-printed decal images onto ceramics! Once you have made your screen and stencils, the fun begins!

In this 2 day workshop, we will work with two different printing techniques to create unique and complex imagery.

On the first day we will explore monotypes using plants, stencils and other found materials to create one-of-a-kind and often unexpected images, experimenting with colour and mark -making.

On the second day our focus will be using Drypoint plates to create imagery to compliment our monoprints from the first day, layering and playing to achieve meaningful and diverse prints.

No prior knowledge of printmaking is required. Linoleum printing, as a form of relief block printing, is one of the most accessible and direct of all the printmaking methods. Linocuts can be simple and graphic, or as intricately detailed as you want. It’s a subtractive process, meaning that you cut away – or subtract – the areas you do not want to print with ink. You should feel confident in your ability to undertake this workshop and expect to enjoy yourself while learning or expanding your understanding of the printmaking technique.
